The 2023 Pilcrow Granite Lake Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a remarkable vineyard perched at 2,097 feet along the ridgeline of Howell Mountain, high above the Napa Valley fog line. The site combines iron-rich red volcanic soils, low vigor, a 10.9% southeast-facing slope and no-till organic farming.
Pilcrow approaches Howell Mountain differently from the massive, heavily extracted style often associated with the appellation. The 2023 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and just 13% alcohol, naturally fermented and aged for 22 months in French oak, only 33% new. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered with zero residual sugar and minimal effective sulfur. The result is mountain Cabernet built around red fruit, flowers, tobacco, cedar, forest floor and mineral intensity rather than sheer weight. Only 222 cases were produced.
