Samuel Louis Smith Chardonnay Spear Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills
One Of California's Most Exciting Chardonnay Vineyards
Samuel Louis Smith crafts some of the most site-specific Chardonnay in Sta. Rita Hills, and Spear Vineyard sits in the heart of the appellation's coolest corridor. This is Burgundian winemaking applied to California fruit with surgical precision.
The 2023 Spear Vineyard Chardonnay comes from a high-density block planted to Dijon clones on calcareous soils just miles from the Pacific. Winemaker Sam Smith ferments with indigenous yeasts in a mix of new and neutral French oak, completing malolactic naturally. The 2023 vintage brought a long, cool growing season to Sta. Rita Hills, yielding wines of uncommon tension and detail. Expect Meyer lemon, white peach, oyster shell minerality, and a saline finish that speaks directly to the vineyard's proximity to the ocean. The wine shows crystalline acidity, medium body, and restrained oak integration.
Fermented and aged 11 months in French oak (20% new), no fining or filtration. Drink from 2025 through 2033.
