“Pretty powerful, tightly wound wine, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. Brisk acids and beams of tannin confer a good deal of salivating freshness. Expressive savory, chalky and mineral undertones take on greater prominence with air. Give this time to soften. Today, the 2023 captures all the tension of this cool, late-ripening year.”

The hillside vineyard, the patient winemaker, and the vintage that aligned.

Founded by David Hirsch in 1980, Hirsch Vineyards transformed a remote ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean into one of California's most iconic Pinot Noir estates. Long before the West Sonoma Coast gained international recognition, David believed the region's cool climate, fractured geology, and rugged landscape could produce wines of world-class character. Today, the estate encompasses 61 individually farmed vineyard blocks, each planted according to its unique soils, elevation, and exposure. This meticulous approach has made Hirsch one of the most respected vineyard names in American wine and continues under the stewardship of the Hirsch family.

The 2023 San Andreas Fault Estate Pinot Noir is the winery's flagship bottling, blending fruit from 30 estate blocks to express the complete personality of Hirsch Vineyard. The exceptionally long, cool 2023 growing season produced one of the most elegant vintages in decades, allowing the grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness at naturally low sugar levels. Fermented and aged with a restrained approach to oak, the wine reveals aromas of blackberry, sour cherry, violet, mint, and redwood forest, followed by layers of cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and savory herbs carried by silky tannins and vibrant coastal acidity. The result is a Pinot Noir that captures both the energy of the Pacific and the remarkable complexity of one of California's truly great vineyard sites.
